Taipei 101 is the world’s 9th tallest building and an absolute joy to visit. I cannot decide what I love more, the view of the city below or the massive wind damper at its heart. The elevator to the top is so fast that I felt queasy riding it.
A view of the city from the top of Taipei 101.
A second view from the top of Taipei 101.
And a third view from the top.
In the upper levels of the tower there is an enormous wind damper in the form of a pendulum which can move more than a meter sideways to reduce oscillations of the building.
The 660 ton heavy weight of the pendulum hangs on steel cables like these.
The motion of the pendulum is damped by enormous hydraulic cylinders fixed at the base of the weight.
