Katsura Campus

My office is on the relatively new Katsura Campus of the University of Kyoto, in building A4, room 116. I am now in the department of chemical engineering despite having little to no working knowledge of chemistry. The buildings have weird inner courtyards which hold all kinds of tubes, exhausts and gangways. The courtyards are supposed to exploit the stack effect and thus work as huge chimneys for all the chemical stuff that is going on around here. It would have also been possible to place this stuff on the outside of the buildings but that wouldn’t have looked as nice, would it?

  1. That looks really, really nice. Like, comparable to the Todai campus you showed me nice.

Or is this just my non-architecture-knowing perception?
